What is the difference between a psychologist and psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. They complete 4 years of medical school just like any other medical doctor such as your family physician. They then go on to complete a residency in psychiatry where they receive training in medication management and psychotherapy to a range of mental health disorders. A psychologist completes their Masters PhD in psychology which takes on average of 5-8 years, that includes supervised training in providing psychotherapy and assessment in settings that include clinic and hospitals. This followed by minimum one year of
